Epiphany

  • 97 cm x 67 cm x 3 cm
Epiphany represents a threshold where the boundaries between human and animal, mortality and immortality, begin to dissolve. The deer-woman figure points a moment of existential awakening. She embodies the instant in which the human confronts her own finitude and turns toward the ancient knowledge of nature. The work is inspired by the surreal masquerade ball organized by the Rothschild family in 1972. Within this context, the deer emerges as a symbolic guide-an archetype associated throughout mythology and folklore with sacredness, transition, and passage to the otherworld. The fusion of the female body with the deer's head renders visible humanity's longing for power, continuity, and immortality. The blue forms flowing from the figure's eyes resemle tears, yet they are composed of lapis lazuli. Historically linked to wisdom, truth, and celestial knowledge, lapis lazuli does not signify emotional release here, but rather the material trace of awareness itself. The stone emphasizes than transformation occurs not on a bodily level, but within consciousness. The white deer functions as a symbol of the immortality being sought-an immortality understood not as physical permanence, but as the endurance of meaning and memory. In reaching toward this figure, the mortal subject redfines her own limits through her relationship with nature. Epiphany suspends humanity's claim to dominance over nature and repositions the human figure through ancient symbols. The work suggests that true knowledge and awareness deepen through the acceptence of mortality.
